Thermo-Cor™
phenolic foam is a rigid, closed cell foam with a unique set of
features:
• Excellent flammability characteristics • Excellent strength
versus density characteristics • Can be produced in a wide
range of densities • Can be produced in large blocks
Thermo-Cor™ is available in block form or as a two-part system.
APPLICATIONS
Potential applications for Thermo-Cor™
phenolic foam products include:
- Interior panels in buses and high speed trains;
- Bulkheads around engine compartments in marine applications;
- Insulation in hospitals and nursing homes where the favorable
combustibility profile of Thermo-Cor™ especially, its low
smoke generation is of special importance;
- Modeling molds; and
- Cores for firedoors.
FIRE AND SMOKE PROPERTIES
Thermo-Cor™
has outstanding fire and smoke properties. Tested under ASTM E-84, a 2
lb/ft³ (32 kg/m³) sample exhibits a flame spread of only 10 and a smoke
density of only 5. It also passes FAR 25.853Z(a-1) with a 36.5 / 36.3
rating. Thermo-Cor™
can withstand temperatures up to 400°F without significant immediate
degradation. | |
FOAM IN PLACE
Thermo-Cor™
can be ordered as an A/B type system, batch mixed on site and foamed
using basic mixing equipment. Ambient conditions will affect the foaming
process and may require special controls. Also the phenolic resin will
need to be kept cold (50°F) until use.
STRENGTH AND DENSITY PROFILE
With a high closed cell content (approx. 90%) and a special cell structure,
Thermo-Cor™ has a high compression strength versus density profile and
excellent physical properties.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION
Thermo-Cor™
phenolic foam when oven cured has very low free formaldehyde
concentrations (in the ppm range). Foam in place applications will
release significant levels of formaldehyde gas.
Foamed Thermo-Cor™
is resistant to most solvents, acids, and bases.
Thermo-Cor™
has been produced in densities of 2 pcf to 35 pcf and in finished block
sizes weighing more than 600 lbs. Larger blocks can be made.
